Will Smith may not have gotten very much Oscar love last February, but he’s springing forward with lots of recognition from the younger generations this April — most notably at the weekend’s MTV Movie Awards.
You see, when it comes to classic Will Smith, we can think of no one better to honour the actor-singer than The Lonely Island. Sure enough, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone killed it at the show with a tribute that went down right before Smith accepted a Generation Award, and encompassed all of his best musical moments to date.
In the bit, the trio donned matching overalls, loud shirts and shades as they performed a medley of classics like “Men in Black” and “Gettin’ Jiggy With It,” bringing us all back to a time when Smith was known for more than just tear-jerker movies like Concussion and The Pursuit of Happiness.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Will Smith tribute without a dose of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song or “Parents Just Don’t Understand” to kick it all off. And naturally there were background dancers decked out in all kinds of different colourful outfits to match each portion of the medley, really bringing the whole thing home.
Hey, we say if you’re going to get a tribute, that’s a pretty classy way to get one. But just in case, Queen Latifah and Halle Berry were also both at the show to give some more heartfelt speeches before Smith grabbed his award, proving that just because stuffy Oscar voters don’t always recognize greatness doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.
In the words of one of our favourite nineties shows, “Go Will, go Will, go Will.”
