If Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth can’t make it, is there any hope for Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson? What about Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin? Do they even stand a chance? Maybe we’re panicking about nothing and the reports that Miley and Liam have ended their engagement and split up for the umpteenth time are all lies and we can still believe in young love.

A source told OK! Australia that the couple, who’ve been on-and-off since meeting on the set of 2009’s The Last Song, couldn’t agree on when they should have children. Liam, who’s 28, is ready to settle down; Miley, 25, not so much.

“He wants kids and doesn’t want to keep putting it off but it’s not quite the timeline Miley had in mind … he is left heartbroken,” said the source. “Miley put off plans for the wedding and Liam was growing tired of it … They haven’t been getting along in recent months.”

The insider added it’s more than just about kids, though: “[She] didn’t really want to get married. It’s something that everyone else seemed to get but Liam. [His] family had been begging him to see the light for a long time, but he had faith in Miley. Now he feels like an idiot.”

While we so don’t want this to be true, the last time they were photographed together, last month, Miley didn’t have her engagement ring on. Not that that means anything, of course. Perhaps they were on their way from the gym and she doesn’t work out in it. But the cause of one of their last splits involved Liam being ready to commit while Miley hemmed and hawed. And it seems time hasn’t changed either of their minds.

We thought when they got back together after spending years apart, they knew what they wanted and, more so, knew what the other wanted — and were fine with it. But if the report is true and starting a family really is the issue, then good on them for putting the brakes on. Because it’s never good if one partner agrees to have a child to make the other happy. That doesn’t mean we’re happy. Though perhaps Miley and Liam are simply one of those couples who are better apart than together. We don’t want to believe it, but maybe their time is up.
