Being an international pop superstar doesn’t mean that you’re immune from dealing with the same issues as the rest of the population. Just ask Lorde. As if we didn’t already love the 21-year-old New Zealand native enough thanks to her incredible albums, unique style, and relatability, now the singer is getting real about how much it sucks to have acne. Preach, Lorde.
Getting honest with her six million Instagram followers this week, Lorde posted a series of Instagram story videos talking about her own struggles with acne. Specifically, the Melodrama singer touched on what *not* to say to people dealing with skin issues. For anyone who has ever canceled their plans over acne, Lorde’s comments are soooooo real.
Beginning the Instagram story by joking about her blue and red light creating a magical tone for her acne, Lorde dives into all the ridiculous things people have said to her over the years about her skin. This could be a drinking game for anyone who has dealt with problem skin. We’d say take a drink for every line you’ve heard, but we don’t want to be responsible for anyone getting alcohol poisoning.
“For real though, acne sucks. You know what else sucks?” says Lorde. “When you’ve had acne for years and years and years, done all the drugs, tried all the things, and people are still like, ‘You know what worked for me: moisturizing.'”
Lorde then begins listing off all the unsolicited advice she’s received over the years, including making a mask with honey, Greek yogurt and avocado, buying an apricot scrub, and of course, coconut oil. “Coconut oil! The secret is coconut oil.”
Of course, the most detested query Lorde and anyone who suffers from acne has received is the one that questions their grooming habits. “And the very worst one, of course, is when people think you’re just dirty. ‘Do you wash your face?’ It’s like ‘Yes, I wash my face. I’m just genetically cursed.'”
As always, Lorde continues to be a role model for her young fans and ends the Insta story on a positive note. “For everyone out there who’s got bad skin — and actual bad skin, not just the kind of bad skin you can just use a fancy cream for a few days and it’ll get better — I feel your pain,” says Lorde. “We’ll get there. We will. I promise.”
