In the realm of movie franchises, the Fast and Furious series is the gift that keeps on giving. Action-packed and fast-moving, the films have long-since earned their spot as a global fan favourite, featuring a cast of Hollywood heavy-hitters including Vin Diesel, The Rock, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, and more. And for any fans who had feared the series might come to an end after The Fate of the Furious back in 2017 — well, let’s just say the story is far from over. F9 is coming to theatres next year and, according to Ludacris, it’s going to be out of this world... literally.

The rapper and FF franchise star sat down for an interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, and co-host Julia Cunningham wasted no time before trying to get some F9 secrets out of him. Namely, Cunningham asked what we've all been thinking: how will the ninth film's plot top the rest? Let’s face it, the Fast and Furious storylines are pretty wild. What started as an illegal street racing film has since turned into a series involving complex revenge plots, elaborate heists, spies, and international crime — so what's next?

Ludicrous was tight-lipped about any specific details, but when Cunningham mentioned space as a potential scenario, he replied, "I will say that you are very intuitive, because you said something right, but I'm not going to give it away."

Cunningham clearly sensed she was on to something, and doubled down on her guess, at which point Ludacris covered his mouth and replied, “I don't know. I don't know what you said." Okay, Luda, we see what you’re doing here. Colour us intrigued.

Mind you, this isn’t the first mention of Fast and Furious upping the blockbuster ante by heading into space. Last year, one of the film’s screenwriters, Chris Morgan, indicated that a space adventure was definitely within the realm of possibility. "I will say," he began, “what’s the best way to answer this? — you’ll have to wait and see. Listen, as long as the stakes were set up correctly, then I’m down for whatever." And so far, it seems the fans are too.

F9 was originally slated for release in May of this year but, due to the coronavirus pandemic, was pushed to April 2, 2021. Which, according to Ludacris, isn't a bad thing. “That just gives the editors a little more time to perfect it even more," he told the SiriusXM hosts. “So, now I can only imagine what's going to happen.”

You know what they say… you can’t rush a good thing, and F9 has big (moon) shoes to fill.
