For some guys (and gals), a marriage proposal can be a loving and thoughtful gesture; for others, it’s a spur-of-the-moment, equally moving expression of love. But Dean Smith is clearly a planner — and very, very patient. Not only did his proposal take over a year to plan, but he also managed to pop the question for 365 days straight.
That’s right: Smith videotaped himself holding up a whiteboard asking his girlfriend, Jennifer, to marry him every single day for an entire year, beginning on January 8, 2014. He would hold up the little board while doing everyday things like eating dinner, doing laundry, brushing his teeth and reading a book.
See, Jennifer loves countdowns, so what better way to pop the question than by counting down from 365 to one. The actual down-on-one-knee bit came while the couple and her family — who were all in on it, naturally — were vacationing in Aruba.
The video documents the entire year and is peppered with shots of Jennifer, their pets and her family along with sweet songs playing in the background, such as Bruno Mars‘ “Just the Way You Are” and Pharrell‘s “Happy,” to which Dean happily lip-synchs.
“I just wanted to let you know how much I love you, how incredibly smart, funny, caring and stunningly beautiful you are,” Smith says in the video. “To me, you are perfect.”
That’s all you get. You’ve got to watch it. And if you’re not reaching for tissues by the end then you might need to check for a pulse. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to clean the streaks of mascara off our faces.
