The questions we have about This Is Us seem endless. How did Jack die? Who was future Randall talking about going to go see with future Tess? Will Sophie and Kevin ever reunite? How bad is Toby’s depression? Why do we have to wait for answers to all of these queries?
True, part of the fun of tuning into the show is theorizing about where things are going next. But as it turns out if you’re one of the series’ leads, you already know.
Mandy Moore popped by Jimmy Kimmel Live recently to promote her new movie The Darkest Minds and she revealed that series creator Dan Fogelman has told her just how he pictures the series ending. Not that it’s ending anytime soon, of course. (Would you want to end a smash series prematurely? We think not.)
“There’s no predetermined end date, but…Dan, our boss, I think he has an idea in his mind of when he sort of sees the story ending, and he knows how it ends, which makes me feel good as an actor and as a viewer, he knows where the show is heading,” she said. “I think the ending will be very satisfying for people. I think it’s very true to sort of what the show evokes from all of us… Dan’s a master at that… People will feel their feelings.”
Oh, believe us, we feel all those feelings. It’s basically why we have a pack of tissues ready every time we tune into the show. But we have to say that if we knew a secret that big, we’re not sure we could keep silent… contracts or not. Moore is certainly a pro, both on-screen and off-screen though, and she’s not telling. If you’ll recall, the actress also knew how Jack died and she managed to keep that secret for nearly two seasons.
To be honest, what we find to be truly impressive is the fact that part of the finale has already been shot and she’s still mum on it all. We have so many theories and questions. Like what kind of footage would come full circle? Our money is on Jack and Rebecca’s wedding… maybe the series ends with Rebecca dying, sort of like a star-crossed lovers situation with Jack? Or maybe it’s something involving future Randall, who is clearly a fan favourite.
“I don’t know if some of the actors that were shooting were aware [that it was part of the finale] at the time,” Moore said, playing coy and telling Kimmel that she wasn’t sure if she was in it.
Please. We know you know, Mandy. We know you really know.
That’s okay for now though, because if we ultimately knew how the show ends then it would kind of ruin the journey. And like they say, life isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. So on a show about… well, life… we can handle the secrets.
For now anyhow.
