After 10 years, which included a turbulent marriage to Ryan Adams, a divorce, a career re-start with This Is Us, and a newfound happiness and love with husband Taylor Goldsmith, Mandy Moore is ready to release new music. The actor and singer debuted her first single in a decade on Monday night with the soft and introspective folk ballad "When I Wasn’t Watching"  and the world was definitely watching and listening.Releasing the single and the video together, Moore worked with director Lauren Dukoff for a visual that matches the song’s personal and inward-looking vibe. Moore stars in the video alone, making her way through a house as she sings about missing signs that were in front of her, possibly alluding to her marriage with Adams. Moore spoke candidly about her relationship to the musician earlier this year when she came forward, along with several other women, to accuse Adams of being emotional and mentally abusive. In an interview with The New York Times, Moore said that Adams purposely stalled her musical career, often telling her about songs she should record and then hiring other women to sing the tracks. The single, which you can watch here, marks Moore’s first original piece of music since 2009’s studio album Amanda Leigh, which she released the same year she and Adams were married. "When I Wasn’t Watching" marks a new era in Moore’s career, one that has seen a huge upswing recently thanks to her starring role on This Is Us, which has led to film roles, including the upcoming Midway co-starring Luke Evans and Patrick Wilson. After dropping the single on Monday night, Moore told fans in her Instagram stories that the new song is just the beginning. Telling fans to "stay tuned," Moore said she has big plans for the end of the year. "I don’t know, maybe finishing my record and maybe having some of the projects that are currently in development at my production company maybe those moving forward and coming to fruition," she said. The artist has been sharing her journey in the recording studio, uploading pictures and even small snippets of new music on her Instagram. In June, Moore shared a short clip of a track that isn't "When I Wasn’t Watching," with the secret song having a more country feel than her new single. Moore was joined in the studio by her husband Taylor Goldsmith and his band Dawes, with Goldsmith pulling double duty as the lead guitarist and singer for the folk rock group.
Mandy Moore is up for her first Emmy Award this Sunday (airing at 8 pm ET on CTV), earning a nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rebecca Pearson in This Is Us, which returns with new episodes on Tuesday, September 24 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV.
While we are uber excited to hear new music from Moore, it’s important to take time to honour the past—we will always love Mandy Moore like candy.
