In a surprising bit of casting news, Margot Robbie, she of The Wolf of Wall Street, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and the upcoming Tarzan and Suicide Squad, has signed on for her next project. The movie is I, Tonya, and the role is the lead, where Robbie will play disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. We’ll let you chew on that for a second.
According to Deadline, the project is in its earliest of days. There’s a script, by Steven Rogers, but no director, though Robbie is “taking it upon herself to find a filmmaker to build this project around herself.”
In case you’re unfamiliar, Harding overcame a poor upbringing and rough childhood to become one of the top figure skaters in the United States. She was the one to beat in 1991, where she landed her first triple axel and won the title at that year’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and placed second in the World Championships behind Kristi Yamaguchi.
While some would say that’s a good enough story, it was three years later when things got movie-worthy. Harding and Nancy Kerrigan were expected to battle for gold in the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer but no one knew how literal the fight would be. Tonya’s husband, Jeff Gillooly, hired a couple of thugs to break Nancy’s leg so she wouldn’t be able to compete. Luckily though, the attack only left Kerrigan bruised. The men were caught and while Nancy had to withdraw from the Nationals (which Tonya ended up winning), Kerrigan did skate at the Olympics, where she won the silver medal. Tonya, however, finished in eighth as her life fell apart around her. Gillooly turned against his wife, Harding avoided jail time but her skating career was over and the USFSA stripped Tonya of her 1994 championship and banned her for life. Definitely a story worth telling — but with Robbie? We guess we’ll have to see.
Sooo, if Margot Robbie is playing Tonya, we can only imagine who they’ll cast to play Nancy Kerrigan. Based on Robbie’s age (25) and that Harding and Kerrigan are a year apart, we have some suggestions.
There are the obvious: Angelina Jolie …
… and Megan Fox.
Charlize Theron can always dye her hair dark …
… or maybe supermodel Adriana Lima might want to give acting another go.
Really, though, we might have to go back in time and cast Elizabeth Taylor …
… or Grace Kelly.
Yes, yes, casting Kerrigan alongside Robbie’s Harding will be tough, but we already have an idea for Gillooly. Zac Efron anyone?
