Ashley Burnham (Callingbull) has done something that has never been done before by a Canadian. In fact, it’s something that has never been done by a first nations woman, either. Burnham has won the Mrs. Universe pageant, and, as she tells CTV News, “It’s probably the biggest honour of my life.”
Burnham grew up in poverty and endured years of physical and sexual abuse in Edmonton, and now she’s hoping to use her platform as Mrs. Universe to educate young people about her experiences.
Watch the video above to hear Burnham talk about her feelings after winning the title. As she says herself, she is “breaking stereotypes.” It’s not just a beauty pageant or a scholarship program, it’s an opportunity to draw attention to a cause. And to your community.
