Meghan Markle has been catching a lot of heat in the press lately, and by lately, we mean for the past three years. The most recent ‘controversy,’ which in Markle’s case is shorthand for ‘not a big deal but something that is going to be blown up in the press and make Markle the target of public opinion and outrage,’ was Markle’s appearance at Wimbledon, which included a pair of jeans (gasp) and a no-photo policy, something that is standard with royals (double gasp). Thankfully, Markle received some much-needed love at this week’s London premiere of The Lion King thanks to musician Pharrell. If anyone knows how to make people happy, it’s Pharrell. Bah dum dum.
Markle’s appearance at Leicester Square with husband Prince Harry marked her first red carpet appearance since giving birth to son Archie in May, with Markle’s meeting with The Lion King star and American royalty (let’s call it what it is) Beyoncé and husband Jay Z dominating the headlines. While we can never get enough of seeing the Queen and Duchess together, there was another meeting that took place that also had a big impact.
Thanks to the power of Twitter and one user’s keen sense of hearing, Meghan and Harry’s interaction with Pharrell, who produced the soundtrack for The Lion King along with Hans Zimmer, is now audible. The trio’s conversation was short but powerful, with Pharrell thanking the couple for the impact their relationship has had on the world.
“So happy for your union. Love is amazing. It’s wonderful. Don’t ever take that for granted but what it means in today’s climate. I just wanted to tell you it’s so significant for so many of us. Seriously,” said Pharrell, with Markle thanking him.
“I mean this. It’s significant. We cheer you guys on,” added Pharrell. Markle, who has been dragged through the media since the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry, with the situation becoming so aggressive and racist that the Duke of Sussex issued a public letter telling magazines and newspapers to back off, admitted that being in the public eye is difficult. “They don’t make it easy,” said Markle, with Pharrell responding “So you understand the significance. It’s beautiful.”
P: Hey how you doing bro?
H: I love the shorts.

Pharrell’s words are a beautiful sentiment for the couple, who have continued to usher in a new era for the royals not only because of Markle’s position as the first person of colour to marry into the family, but also because of their continued efforts to publicly work with new charities while also providing their son Archie with a private life away from the spotlight.
Meghan and Harry’s interaction with Pharrell capped off a night of excitement surrounding the royal couple’s attendance at The Lion King’s London premiere. In a video just posted to Instagram, comedian and actor Billy Eichner shared his ‘freak out’ with co-star Seth Rogen over how to greet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. We’d like to say we would be Beyoncé about meeting Meghan and Harry, but we’re definitely more of a Billy.
