Meghan Markle has always dressed for herself. But life isn’t all rainbows and sunshine (err… fascinators and champagne flutes?) when you decide to marry a prince; some of the fashion choices Markle will make going forward are actually mandatory. Yes, there’s somewhat of an unspoken Royal Fashion Code that members of the Royal Family must adhere to, and for the women, anyway, pantyhose are a must.

On Monday, Markle alongside her fiancé, Prince Harry, attended a public church service to commemorate Commonwealth Day. It was her very first time sporting a pair of sheer tights since her engagement, which she wore under a navy sheath dress by Amanda Wakeley, topped with a coat and hat also by the British designer. This was Markle’s first official outing with Queen Elizabeth, so she was on her best fashion behaviour. But, really, can you blame her for wanting to skip the sheer stockings? They feel so dowdy and dated and restricting.

Previously, the bride-to-be had disregarded the Queen’s request for sheer nylons. Maybe Markle just hadn’t gotten the fashion memo yet? It’s hard to imagine her purposely dissing her future GMIL, let alone Her Royal Majesty. Though at past events, including her very own engagement photos with Harry, her legs were very much bare. Oh, the horror!

Perhaps even more noteworthy than Markle conforming to the stuffy royal style rules was her and soon-to-be sis-in-law Kate Middleton’s footwear. The pair both wore navy frocks as well as matching navy heels, with Meghan opting for Manolo Blahnik and Kate for Rupert Sanderson. And nylons, of course. Kate must have a massive collection of sheer pantyhose by this point.

It’s awesome to see Markle fitting in, both in terms of personality and fashion. She’s now following some of the mandatory Royal clothing rules, but we hope her outfit choices don’t change too much, because Markle’s sense of style is very much a breath of fresh air at Buckingham Palace.
