Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been dating for over a year, and their time together has been glorious. The tabloids have had a field day with their relationship — a lot of times, not in a good way, to the point where Harry had to make a public statement to the media and public, to back the hell up and settle down. And the coverage continues to be crazy. Guess that’s what happens when an American actress, based in Toronto, starts dating one of the most eligible bachelors around.
All we could do up until this point was look at their relationship through the eyes of the paparazzi, and presume that all the bubbling marriage talk was true. But now things have hit a new level. Markle is interviewed in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, in which she talks about her show, her background, the tabloids and, yes, her relationship with Prince Harry. And it’s everything we could have asked for.
Markle was somewhat famous to begin with, but the level of scrutiny she’s been under since news of her relationship broke is on a whole other, life-changing level. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves — some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she tells Vanity Fair. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”
Ahh, her boyfriend. That guy who just got demoted to sixth in line for the throne. Or perhaps it’s fiancé now, if the rumours about Harry popping the question while they were vacationing in Botswana last month are true.
As for how she deals with all the attention, Markle gets straight to the point. “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple,” she says. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
She further explained: “We’re a couple. We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
ERMAGERD. They’re totally engaged. If they weren’t, she wouldn’t speak with that kind of confidence; that would freak out any guy who hadn’t yet asked. Megs, we love a great love story too and we can’t wait for you and Harry to make the announcement. That can be soon, right? Like maybe in a couple weeks when Harry is in Toronto for the Invictus Games. Making it official in Canada would be kind of fabulous, don’t y’all think?
