There’s been a lot of will he or won’t he this past week regarding Meghan Markle‘s dad, Thomas Markle, walking her down the aisle at her wedding on Saturday. A couple of weeks back, Kensington Palace released a statement saying he would be. Then this past weekend happened, which changed everything, as did a heart attack and subsequent surgery. Thomas flip-flopped, and while he wanted to attend, his health — not to mention his desire to not embarrass his daughter any further — may have been the deciding factor. Whatever the case, now we know.

Meghan’s statement comes a day after Thomas’s successful heart surgery, and here’s hoping for a smooth recovery. But Megs already knew she had to address it. She’s never had to deal with this level of scrutiny but the professional in her, the actress in her, knows how to handle rumours — good or bad. And rather than have the world speculate, or have to rely on TMZ to find out what’s going on, she took control. Her statement is succinct, clear, kind and she’s looking out for him. And while it’s sad, she can also now focus on what’s most important: her wedding and future with Harry.

What Meghan didn’t say was who’s now walking her down the aisle. Her mom, Doria Ragland, arrived in London on Wednesday, as did her best friend, Jessica Mulroney (along with her entire family). And it makes the most sense that Doria would do the honours, as she’s the person Meghan is closest to.

Royal protocol be damned! Bring on the beautiful ladies.
