How many members of the press must have being dying to get a soundbite out of Meghan Markle’s dad? Tabloid journalists and paparazzi would probably have given their left pinkie to be the first to publish a “Here’s how I feel about Prince Harry and my daughter Meg” quote. No doubt it came as a shock then, to hear that Dad’s first, and apparently only, statement on the couple was given to ‘a passerby’ at a local convenience store.
According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, 73-year-old retiree Thomas Markle was shopping in his hometown of Rosarito, Mexico when he was approached by said passerby. When asked his thoughts on the upcoming wedding, the former Emmy-winning lighting director answered. Freely. And in detail. To a stranger. *Shrug*.
“I think it’s wonderful. I’m very delighted. I think they’re [a] very good match. I’m very happy for them, Meghan and Harry.”
“I think it’s wonderful. I’m very delighted. I think they’re [a] very good match. I’m very happy for them, Meghan and Harry.” That’s nice, right? “I love my daughter very much—Harry’s a gentleman.” Quite literally true.
“Now leave me alone, please. Don’t bother me anymore. No more flashing cameras in my eyes or I’ll flash back.” That’s what we would have said from the start, so he’s a better man than us.
It has to be tough, going from relative obscurity to having paparazzi follow you around every single day. Maybe the best way to get them off your back is to give the scoop to whatever random stranger asks the right question. Still, somehow we don’t think this is going to be the last of the press hanging around Rosarito, but unless they want to be flashed, they might want to keep their distance from the father of the bride.
