Meghan Markle’s strained relationship with her father Thomas Markle has become the worst kept secret in the Royal Family. From staged photoshoots with the paparazzi, to harsh critiques of his daughter and new son-in-law in the paper, to skipping not one, but two of Meghan’s weddings, Thomas Markle is not about to win any awards for royal father of the year. Thankfully, Meghan still has her TV dad Wendell Pierce to dole out sage advice. Not only to his ‘daughter,’ but to her real-life father as well:
“If you care about Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, then that should be the first and foremost in your mind before you say anything,” Wendell shared with The Daily Telegraph in a new interview. “If you love your daughter, just love your daughter. It’s not for public consumption.”
Sage advice, indeed. Thomas Markle would be wise to take heed.
Pierce played Markle’s father on the drama Suits for four years, with the pair growing close on the Toronto set. During the filming of their final scene together, which included Markle’s character marrying her longtime boyfriend, played by Patrick J. Adams, Wendell said he took the opportunity share some words of wisdom with the future Duchess, and to make her a promise.
“We had a moment I cherish,” Wendell told The Telegraph. “I was sitting with Meghan in her wedding dress, as we waited for a set-up. We were alone. I said to her, ‘Your life is going to change.”
Wendell continued, saying “It’s going to be amazing but I want you to know that I’m your friend, and no matter where you are or what’s going on – if the fishbowl that you’re in ever starts getting to you – you can call me.”
Ugh. That’s some real love talk right there. Well said, Wendell.
It’s a refreshing change to have Markle’s ‘father’ say positive things about the new Duchess of Sussex in the press.
Markle and Adams both left Suits in Season 7, with their characters getting married and moving to Seattle. During a recent trip to Dublin, a Royal fan named Fiona Moore told Hello Magazine that she spoke with Meghan about her Suits departure. “I’m a fan of Suits and I said to her that I miss it and she said ‘so do I’,” said Moore. “She seemed very relaxed and was joking and laughing.”
During the same trip, Meghan also told fans that she missed her former hometown of Toronto. “It’s a great place,” said Markle.
Does Meghan’s love of TO have anything to do with Wendell Pierce? Maybe, maybe not. We just love when celebrities celebrate Canada.
