It’s safe to say we’ve all been enjoying Meghan Markle’s fashion evolution, from the white coat at the engagement announcement, to the bright yellow shift dress from just last week. But let’s hope her spending slows down, because she’s on track to outspend sister-in-law Kate Middleton by ten times (no, that’s not a typo). And that’s no mean feat, considering Kate’s 2017 wardrobe came in at a cool $206,900 (£119,000), according to the Daily Mail. So if Meghan’s current shopping habits continue, she could be looking at a bill of over $1.7m for the year.
But let’s break down that figure a little. If we took her now infamous Givenchy wedding dress alone, which according to OK, was estimated at $673,000 (£387,000), that puts her way ahead in the spending stakes. So that goes some way to explain the huge gap in the totals. And Meghan hasn’t been holding back – according to Marie Claire, she apparently stepped out in almost $50,000 (£28,000) worth of threads on her first official foreign tour in Ireland. Though it’s possible Kate just has thriftier taste?
It’s protocol that royal family members are forbidden from receiving free gifts (case in point, Harry and Meghan returned over $9m worth of wedding gifts after the nuptials), so anything they’re seen in, you can be sure belongs to them personally.
Given the strict royal dress code (no more bare legs, mini-skirts, or wedges), it’s certain that most all of Meghan’s pre-royal wardrobe will be pretty much unwearable, and considering the Duchess is still in the infant stages of her royal career, it makes sense we’ll be seeing her in a range of brand new outfits. Though most royal fashion watchers expect she’ll follow in Kate’s footsteps by outfit-repeating such high-end garments, it’s perhaps a bit soon for that. She’s surely building up a capsule Duchess wardrobe that can see her through decades of a life in the public eye, from formal outings, family occasions, and philanthropic engagements.
And in case you were wondering, now that she’s officially in the clan, it’s Prince Charles who has the honour of footing such a hefty bill. Lucky Meghan.
