It’s coming up to almost a year since she married into the Royal Family, and our favourite Duchess is finally stepping out of (or maybe back into?) her fashion comfort zone. Meghan Markle took a walkabout today with Prince Harry, and lo and behold, it wasn’t only her advancing pregnancy that gave her a rosy glow – because she dazzled in some fantastically bright footwear.

And it’s quite the style departure for her. As per unofficial royal tradition, Meghan has, up until, now mainly favoured nude or neutral-coloured shoes, following in the well-heeled footsteps of sister-in-law and fellow Duchess, Kate Middleton. But in bright letterbox-red stilettos, which matched her coat, the Duchess of Sussex looked every bit the royal and the fashionista we know her to be.

Since her relationship with Harry, whether at home or abroad, in an outfit bright or more subtle, the Duchess has tended to wear nudes or neutrals on official engagements.

So today’s change is rather marked, certainly the first time she’s matched her shoes to a bright outfit, and perhaps a sign she’s easing into her new role.

In fact, her first few official royal outings saw her play it very sartorially safe, donning some pretty snooze-worthy beige ensembles last summer, to Prince Charles’s birthday celebration, as well as on her first solo outing with the Queen. Many Meghan fashion watchers wondered if this was her attempt to blend in and acquiesce to palace expectations, being but a humble newcomer.

But we know by now that Meghan is prone to pushing royal expectations just a smidge – from her untraditional wedding cake, to the dark nail polish she showed off at last month’s British Fashion Awards (it’s said female royals are only to wear a specific shade of nude nail polish, as per the Queen’s preferences), so maybe it was only a matter of time before she slowly started to show more of her unique fashion flair.

Wearing such a bright shade on most of your outfit is always a risk, but, worn with such thoughtful coordination is winning her plenty of style points from us. And as long as she doesn’t step out in wedges, she’s probably getting a thumbs up from the Queen too.
