Mel B is making the brave choice to receive treatment for her sex and alcohol addiction. Just as humbling, the singer is making her decision public in hopes of inspiring others who are struggling with addiction to seek help.

The Spice Girl turned America’s Got Talent host made the announcement on Sunday, speaking with the UK publication The Sun. “The past six months have been incredibly difficult for me,” said Mel B, real name Melanie Brown. In March 2017, Brown announced that she was filing for divorce from husband Stephen Belafonte. The divorce was finalized in December 2017, after an ugly court battle that included Brown accusing Belafonte of being abusive, while Belafonte said that Brown’s extravagant lifestyle had wiped out their savings.

Brown told The Sun that her latest project, which includes working on her new book titled Brutally Honest, has brought up some disturbing memories that have forced her to reevaluate her life. “I’ve been working with a writer on my book, Brutally Honest, and it has been unbelievably traumatic reliving an emotionally abusive relationship and confronting so many massive issues in my life,” said Brown.

“I am being very honest about drinking to numb my pain but that is just a way a lot of people mask what is really going on. Sometimes it is too hard to cope with all the emotions I feel. But the problem has never been about sex or alcohol — it is underneath all that.”

Brown said that she is fully aware of the “crisis point” she has reached and plans on attending a therapy program in the UK, saying “I am very, very British and I know that will work best for me.” We’re not really sure how to interpret that last part, but we do applaud her for seeking help.

Hoping to help other people who are suffering, Mel says “I am still struggling but if I can shine a light on the issue of pain, PTSD and the things men and women do to mask it, I will do. I am speaking about this because this is a huge issue for so many people.”

Friends (are they friends if they speak to magazines?) of Brown spoke to The Sun and said that while the singer is always professional when it comes to her job, anytime she’s not at work is time to drink. The ‘friend’ also listed some of the famous men Mel has slept with, which frankly seems like nobody’s business but hers.

Brown will finish her role as a judge on the current season of America’s Got Talent before checking into the rehab facility in the UK. The singer has three children, who, she says, are her inspiration for getting clean. Sending all our girl power to Scary Spice.
