Melania Trump has been very busy lately, posting photos of the White House decorated for Christmas. This past week she’s tweeted several images of the interior giving people an inside look at how the first family celebrates the holiday season.

The décor includes heaps of garland covering doorframes, Christmas tree ornaments the size of someone’s head and a rather unusual looking display of alarming red Christmas trees lined up in a row. It’s the trees in particular that have caught people’s attention. The Twitterverse has started comparing them to all sorts of different things, in particular the dystopian novel and TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale.
A psychologist stepped up to give some insight into why the choice of design is so jarring for people. Dr Toby Israel told The Guardian that the trees, “have the association of not just being different, but blood or rage, shock.” Not the best kind of message to give off during what is supposed to be a joyful time of year.

It didn’t take long for the First Lady to address the criticism. At an event in Virginia, she said, “We are in the 21st century and everybody has different taste.” Melania went on to say, “I think they look fantastic. I hope everybody will come over and visit it. In real life, they look even more beautiful.”
Whether you love the trees or hate them, there’s no denying that the internet came up with some pretty creative memes. Check out some of the best ones below:
