We love Melissa McCarthy for many reasons. Her amazing abilities at lip-sync battles. The fact that she’s starring in the new Ghostbusters movie. Her long-awaited return to the Gilmore Girls continuation (finally!).
But after watching her become the very first female to ever win the Best Comedic Genius Award at this weekend’s MTV Movie Awards, she may be one of our all-time favourites forever now.
You see, not only did McCarthy accept the award with grace, pretty much calling out every single female comedian we know and love for their own contributions to the genre, but she also gave a feminist shout out to the lady who started it all for her — her mom.
“I may be the first woman to win this award, but I am certainly, certainly not the first one to deserve it. I think I’m a walking human patchwork of all the remarkable, funny women who I have loved and studied over the years,” she said in her acceptance speech. “I am only here because Carol Burnett, Jane Curtin, Phyllis Diller, Whoopi Goldberg, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Lucille Ball, Gilda Radner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Diane Keaton, Tracy Ullman, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin, and my mom … who taught me not to fear being the butt of the joke, taught me not to worry about being likeable or perfect, and to lovingly go for the kill.”
Seriously, is there any better advice a mom could give?
We think not. Congrats Melissa — keep on riding that wave of fame as far as you can. We can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.
