Streep rants again
Her Golden Globes speech was applauded by many, but Meryl Streep wasn’t, or isn’t, done. In spite of the criticism she received from President Donald Trump (and every other pro-Trumper out there), Streep didn’t let it faze her one bit. She was armed and ready for a second round and let it all out at a Human Rights Campaign fundraising gala in NYC on Saturday.
“Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated and currently, I am the most over-berated actress … of my generation,” she said, referencing Trump’s post-Globes tweet in which he called her “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.”
She noted that while she wished she could simply stay home and “read and garden and load the dishwasher” rather than take to a podium, “the weight of all these honours” she’s received in her career compelled her to speak out.
“It’s terrifying to put the target on your forehead, and it sets you up for all sorts of attacks and armies of brownshirts and bots and worse, and the only way you can do it is to feel you have to. You have to! You don’t have an option. You have to.” Streep didn’t elaborate on the types of attacks she may have faced since her Globes speech, or whom she was referring to with the term “brownshirts,” which was originally used to describe Hitler’s Nazi militia.
Streep then spoke about men always being put at the top but how women, people of colour and other minorities have progressed and began achieving their rights — but that there are attempts now to derail all that work. Which brought her back to Trump.
“If you think people got mad when they thought the government was coming after their guns, wait until they come and try to take away our happiness,” she affirmed. “We’re not going to go back to the bad old days of ignorance and oppression and hiding who we are.”
As tears welled up and her voice cracked under the strain of the emotion, Streep stated: “We owe it to the people who have died for our rights, and who have died before they even got their own. If we live through this precarious moment. If his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we will have much to thank this president for. He will have woken us up to how fragile freedom is.”
ALL the awards.
Khloé Kardashian celebrated her divorce with a name change cake
There are many ways to commemorate the end of a marriage, be it with a divorce party or one last selfie together. But leave it to Khloé K to ring in her sweet new life with a cake that proves she’s more independent than ever.
In a series of Snapchats, sister Kim shared what Khloé’s assistants got for her, “because she got a new passport without her old last name! It’s her new last name.” But really her old old last name.
Her assistants are clearly the best. Also, this is what it’s like to have your cake and eat it too. Go, skinny bitch.
Drew Barrymore captured her daughter’s Disney meltdowns and was more than happy to share them on TV
Going to Disney with kids is not a vacation, it’s work. Every parent knows this. Drew Barrymore knows this. While appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the mom of two (daughters Olive and Frankie) recalled the visits, saying how great it is, and how their joy gives her joy, “but if you’ve ever taken your kids to Disneyland or Disney World, it all ends at some point in, like … mayhem.”
That’s when Seth held up this photo, which he describes, “This seems to be a moment where you caught the mayhem because she’s just dying.” YES.
Drew explained that Olive was “losing it” because she “wanted to chase a duck or an egret” and Mama Drew didn’t want her kid chasing a wild bird. That’s when Seth busted out another pic of Olive, once again, having a meltdown, this time at Disneyland.
It’s probably safe to say Frankie’s her favourite kid.
Céline talked about life without René 🙁
It was just over a year ago that Céline Dion lost her husband, René Angélil, but he’ll forever be with her.
“There’s days when I feel that it’s been three years, and there’s days that I feel it’s not happening,” Dion told Nancy O’Dell on the Grammys red carpet. “He’s always with me, and I know that he’s very proud that we’re back in the industry.”
It’s still bittersweet to see her doing her thing, because Céline and René were such a fixture at these events. But don’t be sad. Instead, enjoy this diva moment of Céline meeting Gaga.
