TV and film production might not be back up to 100 per cent just yet, but that hasn’t stopped the powers-that-be from making some pretty big plans. And as it turns out, at least one of those plans include Saturday Night Live star Michael Che. The comedian has landed a deal to star in his own six-part sketch comedy on HBO Max, and now he—like the rest of Hollywood—is waiting to get into production. Each episode of the untitled series will revolve around a timely topic: police brutality, unemployment or even falling in love. Then, through a series of vignettes and sketches Che and his (TBD) cast of characters will highlight those experiences from a Black perspective, according to TVLine. “It’s less about being ‘right’ and more about being honest, even at the risk of being controversial,” the logline reads.“I’m really excited to be working on this show with HBO Max,” Che said in a statement. “It’s a project I’ve been thinking about for a while and we have a lot of sketches we want to shoot, so please wear your masks so that we can go into production.”[video_embed id='1781537']RELATED: Shane Gillis fired from SNL for racist and homophobic jokes[/video_embed]In addition to starring in the series Che will also executive produce alongside SNL creator Lorne Michaels and Erin Doyle. It’s unclear whether or how this gig could affect Che’s current one on the Saturday night sketch series, on which he co-hosts Weekend Update and serves as the co-head writer alongside Colin Jost. But, as Aidy Bryant proved with her Hulu series Shrill, actors on SNL have pulled double duty before.“Michael brings a distinct comedic perspective as he illustrates the uncomfortable truths across multiple topics” Suzanna Makkos, an executive for HBO Max, also said in the release. “We look forward to sharing his unique vision and necessary point of view with our audiences.”Che began working on Saturday Night Live as a writer in 2013. He joined Jost on the Weekend Update desk in 2014, replacing Cecily Strong. Although the recurring sketch has been a part of SNL since its first season in 1975, Che and Jost are the first pair of male co-anchors. Previously Amy Poehler and Tina Fey became the first pair of female co-anchors when they hosted together from 2004-2006. Jimmy Fallon, Colin Quinn, Seth Meyers, Horatio Sanz, Norm Macdonald, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, Charles Rocket and Jane Curtain have all also hosted the segment over the years, replacing original anchor Chevy Chase. Before joining SNL Che did the New York stand-up circuit and appeared on The Daily Show. In 2018 he and Jost also hosted the 70th Primetime Emmys. Meanwhile his untitled HBO Max series will be the first sketch series on the new streaming service, where it will live alongside a roster of stand-up specials from people like Chelsea Handler and Tracy Morgan.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Cat has epic battle with persistent windshield wiper[/video_embed]
