It’s not the size of the company that counts, it’s how you use it.
That seems to be the message from Sears Canada’s latest advertisement featuring Canadian funny-man Mike Myers. Even though the company has already closed several stores, laid off thousands of employees and was labelled as “dying a slow, sad death” by the New York Times, it’s trying to assure customers all is well.
And what better way to do that then with a face every Canadian knows and loves?
It turns out Sears Canada has had the star-powered trump card sitting in its back pocket the whole time. The Canadian star has ties with the company dating back decades because of his brother Peter, who has been an employee with them for 32 years. That’s why when the corporate big wigs tapped Mike for an opportunity to help save the faltering company, he happily obliged.
The ad shows that Sears is trying to remain defiant, despite its recent struggles.
“Is Sears Canada going away?” Mike asks at the beginning of the video.
“We’re not going anywhere,” Peter replies. “You of all people should know not to believe everything you read in the papers.”
But, of course, it’s not without its humour:
“Are you referring to the Mike Myers alien UFO sex diet?!”
