The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been around for over 20 years but has often been criticized for its lack of diversity. No trans woman of any colour has walked the famous runway and one model wants to change that.

Model Leyna Bloom announced on Twitter this week that she’s on a mission to become the first out trans model of color to walk the show’s runway.

Back in November, when last year’s show aired, she called out the company for their lack of diversity.

Bloom has always admired the company and told Yahoo that it would be a dream come true if she got the chance to walk.

“It’s always been a dream for me, like so many others, not just trans — POC, all women, and some men even,” she says. “This is a platform that glorifies femininity. I always felt in my most natural state I am heavenly. For my trans sisters, regardless of color, this will be a moment for us all.”

She’s been modeling since 2014 and made history when she became the first trans person of colour to be featured in Vogue India.

“Work has been steady. There’s definitely been a gamble with other bigger brands to take on a trans model of color,” she admits. “I don’t know why it’s so hard for them to want to give us a shot. Then again, nothing happens overnight.”

By choosing her to walk in the Victoria Secret Fashion show, she believes the company “will have the power to set the tone, and that would be the biggest leap up to date. Can you imagine what that would do for our world?”

“We all have unique stories; we are just different, and we have every right to be. We just want to be represented, and maybe they will want to represent us too,” says Bloom.

Her campaign on Twitter has gone viral with over 30,000 RTs and almost 100,000 likes. She has received loads of encouragement from those who support her cause.

Hopefully Victoria’s Secret realizes what an inspiration it would be to choose Bloom to walk. If not, their loss.
