When one Modern Family ends, a new family begins. That’s the case for actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who is saying goodbye to his long-running sitcom this season and saying hello to his first child.Ferguson was a guest on The Late Late Show With James Corden on Wednesday night along with actor Charlie Hunnam. The men were discussing Hunnam’s upcoming 40th birthday and what the new milestone age means. “It’s when you finally become an adult, I feel,” said Ferguson, who is 44. "Like, ‘I need to start getting serious about things.'"The actor casually continued, saying “Actually, this is something I haven’t even mentioned to anyone, if we could just keep it between the three of us and you all, but I’m actually expecting a baby in July with my husband.” The news was greeted with a round of applause from the audience and congratulations from both Hunnam and Corden, who has three children with his wife Julia.
When asked the sex of the child, Ferguson responded that he’s having a human (read: no gender reveal parties here). The actor promoted his appearance on Corden’s show on Instagram, writing “I’m on @latelateshow tonight with #charliehunnam talking about Extreme Makeover Home Edition, the last season of @abcmodernfam & a few other little things!”Those little things are of course a little baby. Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita, a lawyer, were married in 2013 after dating for two years. The couple has not gone into detail on whether they are using a surrogate or adopting, but in the past have expressed their desire to start a family. In 2013, Ferguson told People Magazine the couple was planning for children in the near future. “In the next four, five years,” said Ferguson. “I’m 38, so you know, I don’t have a biological clock, but if I did, it would be ticking.”Ferguson is currently filming the eleventh and final season of Modern Family and talked about the sitcom’s end on The Late Late Show. “It’s incredibly sad. It’s something I’ve been doing for 11 years,” said Ferguson. “It seems like a lifetime, but it’s flown by,” adding “We’ll never have a job this good.”Ferguson’s Modern Family character Mitchell Pritchett welcomed his daughter Lily with husband Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) on the first episode of Modern Family back in 2009. It’s unclear whether Ferguson and Mikita plan on introducing their new child in the same fashion, but a little pomp and circumstance (and a great soundtrack) is always a nice touch.
Even with Modern Family ending, Ferguson will still be busy working before his new baby arrives. The actor is part of the upcoming Broadway show Take Me Out and will co-star with Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams and Suits alum Patrick J. Adams.
