In 2017, it seems like a big part of being a celebrity is unfortunately having to endure online bullying. With the rise in social media, people have more access to celebs than ever before, which can mean exciting ways to connect with your favourite actor or musician, but it can also mean the celeb can easily see when people feel the need to comment on their bodies.

This is definitely the case for actor Sarah Hyland, who is best known for playing Hayley Dunphy on Modern Family. The actor has been receiving an onslaught of negativity online about her looks, namely her weight, with the bullying reaching a tipping point after Hyland recently posted a picture of herself wearing a t-shirt from her boyfriend Dom Sherwood’s anti-bullying fashion line.

Hyland, who is currently the face of Kohls Candy line and starred in this week’s TV remake of Dirty Dancing, shared a lengthy post on social media in hopes of putting an end to speculation about her weight and negativity towards her.

“I’d like to address something that has not only been brought up on Twitter but has been HEAVILY discussed by all of you in my Instagram comments,” wrote Hyland. “That something is my weight. I normally don’t comment on things like this because it draws attention to those trying to spread negativity but I’m here to explain a few things and spread love.”

Hyland says that the irony of being bullied while wearing an anti-bullying t-shirt was not lost on her and decided to speak out to help other young women in similar situations. “…it dawned on me that young girls are reading posts that are saying that I’m promoting anorexia due to my weight. While these comments don’t affect me, they may affect others.”

The actor went on to say that she hasn’t ‘had the best year’ and has spent months on bed rest, causing her to lose much of her muscle mass and unintentionally drop weight. Although Hyland doesn’t reveal her current medical status, she does say that she’s been taking prednisone, a strong steroid used to reduce inflammation. “For those on prednisone I know what you’re going through and I commend you sticking it out as I have,” wrote Hyland. “My self confidence is not rendered from your comments. Because I will always be too fat. I will always be too skinny.”

Ending on a positive note, Hyland wrote “I am grateful for the life I live and you should be too. Don’t let other’s comments alter any part of you! Love and positivity is what we need most. Especially at a time like this.”
