Do spiders give you the heebee jeebees? What about big, fat, hairy ones that like to “molt” right in front of your very eyes? If they do, this video of a tarantula named Pebbles will send a (slight) shiver down your spine, but you’ll yell out “cool!” while watching it unfold. Here’s why:
Pebbles, an 11-year-old Mexican red-kneed tarantula, just wants to molt i.e. shed its skin so it can grow some more. The process takes seven whole hours to complete — good thing people don’t take that long to change clothes. Luckily for us, the whole ordeal has been time lapsed into a less than a minute (yay!).
First, Pebbs starts off by wiggling around on the ground. It looks like a sped-up exorcism. Shudder, right? Then as the video hits the 22-second mark, our mighty buddy emerges from the bottom of the exoskeleton. She just popped right out. Super creepy.
Her brand new exoskeleton is way prettier than her old worn-out one that she understandably discards to the side. Get outta here, oldie.
If you didn’t know anything about molting, you’d think Pebbles had cloned herself. The only thing worse than one tarantula is two tarantulas.
In all honestly, that wasn’t all that bad, right? A tarantula shedding is the equivalent to us spending hours looking through our closet for the perfect outfit. It’s the good thing Pebbles only changes once every 1.5 years. Phew.
