As anyone who has kids can attest, getting them to sit still for extended periods of time can be a challenge on the best of days. This is, after all, partially why things like recess, play gyms and playgrounds exist. The youngins need to get their energy out somewhere!
It’s also why taking your kids to the movies can sometimes be a challenge. Sure, they want to see the latest Cars movie, but at the same time they don’t necessarily know how to sit in an actual seat and just watch the flick in a theatre — sitting still just isn’t in their DNA.
That’s why we love (LOVE) this idea from the luxury movie theatre chain Cinepolis: indoor playgrounds at the actual movie theatre. Now your multitasking kids can get their energy out while watching the movie they’ve been begging you to see. Or better yet, you can take multiple kids and there’s something for everyone to do.
According to reports these theatres (which are charging three bucks more per ticket) will have colourful walls, luxury seats for adults and play structures with slides, mini merry-go-rounds and things to climb on — just like an outdoor set tends to have. Bringing a toddler? No worries. The theatre chain has thought of that too, and is installing a fenced-in “play yard” with artificial turf.
Announcing the first ever dedicated children’s movie theater auditoriums in the U.S., #CinepolisJunior! Featuring a play structure with slides, play area with tire-climbers, unique seating like bean bags and lounge chairs, and much more, Cinépolis Junior is making its debut at Cinépolis Pico Rivera and Cinépolis Vista on March 16. Obviously these specialized theatres aren’t meant for parents wanting to take their kids to adult movies or for the cinefiles out there who are looking to watch a movie in a kids-free zone. But it sure does seem like an awesome alternative for all the frazzled parents out there who just need 90 minutes or so to sit and be while their kids go nuts.
Besides, it works at the drive-in; why not take that idea and bring it inside?
Unfortunately it doesn’t look as though this bright idea will be coming to Canada anytime soon; as we know Cineplex seems to have the movie theatre franchise business pretty locked down here. And sure, they have that Stars and Strollers program, but that’s more for babies and infants. So for now all we can do is hope this idea in the States carries on, and then it comes here down the line too.
Because hey — if we can have booze and luxury food items in theatres, why not have a couple of slides and a bounce pad too?
In the meantime, looks like it’s movie streaming and playdates for us.
