Game of Thrones may be coming to an end, but in return, HBO has five (five!) prequels in the works. It seems like it would be easier to just keep GoT going, right? Though details of the shows have been kept under wraps, we now know that the first prequel, which is slated to begin filming in 2019, has found its first actor with Naomi Watts. Oooo we like her.

The unnamed show will take place thousands of years before the current Game of Thrones setting, with Watts playing a character described as a “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” In the world of GoT, a dark secret could mean an affair with your twin brother, an affair with your nephew, or an affair with the father of your ex. The secret could also have nothing to do with an affair…but it probably does.

Author George R.R. Martin is involved in the upcoming prequel, co-creating and writing the story with showrunner Valerie Goldman. Although both Martin and Goldman are remaining tight lipped about who else will star in the new series and what it will be about, Martin has made clear what we should not expect.

All five of the HBO shows will be prequels, as opposed to spin-offs focused on the current story.

None of the five prequels will focus on the widely discussed fan favourite storylines of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unlikely.

The famous story of Robert’s Rebellion will not be discussed in any of the prequels.

Finally, and possibly most disappointing, no Game of Thrones cast members, dead or alive (on the show), will be involved in the prequels.

While the last point is a bummer, most of the Game of Thrones cast were virtually unknown before joining the world of Westeros and are now some of the most beloved actors on TV. So, we’ll try to stay positive and look forward to discovering our new favourite thespians. Plus, Naomi Watts is awesome.

Seasons 1 to 6 of Game of Thrones are available now on CraveTV.
