By 26 years old, Annie Parker had lost both her mother and her older sister to cancer. She was told by medical professionals that these losses amounted to “bad luck”, but she wasn’t convinced. She felt that her mother’s cancer was somehow related to her sister’s and feared she would be next.
Sadly, she wasn’t wrong.
In 1980, Annie was diagnosed with breast cancer and would endure it twice more before she was cancer-free. Annie’s devotion to finding out more about cancer and her refusal to let the disease overcome her made the discovery of a hereditary cancer gene, BRCA1, possible. Her story inspired an award-winning Hollywood film called Decoding Annie Parker, starring Helen Hunt and Aaron Paul.
Annie continues to tell her story and spread awareness through her book, Annie Parker Decoded, and with a new stage performance called S.T.A.R.S – Survivors Tell A Real Story, which explores the lives of those who have overcome cancer.
She recently sat down with the ladies of The Social to share her incredible story and tell us more about S.T.A.R.S. You can watch that conversation in the video clip above.
The performance takes place on June 2nd. Click here to purchase tickets for S.T.A.R.S.: Survivors Tell A Real Story and use the promo code SOCIAL20 for 20% off the ticket price.
