Lately, CoverGirl has been making loads of strides towards inclusivity. Remember when it made James Charles the first-ever CoverBoy or signed Nura Afia as its first model in a hijab? Sure, at the end of the day it’s a cosmetics company hawking eye shadow and mascara, but it’s also a brand that isn’t afraid to shake up the norm and, frankly, it’s refreshing.
Enter CoverGirl’s latest–and oldest–model to sign on the dotted line: Canadian-born Maye Musk, who’s 69. Maye Musk, you’re asking, wracking your brand for why the name sounds so familiar. Maye is none other than Elon Musk’s proud mama (yup, the guy behind Tesla, SpaceX and PayPal).
“Who knew, after many years of admiring the gorgeous CoverGirl models, that I would be one at 69 years of age? It just shows, never give up. Thank you CoverGirl, for including me in your tribe of diversity. Beauty truly is for women of all ages, and I can’t wait to take you all along this amazing journey with me!” Maye wrote on Instagram.
The CoverGirl gig is huge, for sure, but Maye isn’t a new face to the modeling industry. She’s been working at her career in front of the camera for the last 50 years, starring in her first makeup advertisement in 1965.
In addition to being #beautygoals, Maye is also a dietitian with two master’s degrees under her belt. Brains and beauty!
“People are living longer and enjoying their lives more and know they don’t have to disappear at 65 when they retire,” Maye said in an interview with The New York Times. “I will never retire. My mom never retired. I’ll work until no one wants me anymore, and then I’ll find something else and I’ll still be a dietitian doing nutrition research, which I love.”
Inspiring women of all ages, Maye is a positive role model for healthy living, aging gracefully, and winning at life in general. You can never get too many of those.
