Nicole Kidman may be happily married to Keith Urban, with whom she shares two daughters, but before the country singer, Kidman was hitched to Tom Cruise. During their marriage, they adopted two children — Isabella and Connor — and it was all good … until it wasn’t. In 2001, after over a decade together, Tom and Nic split, and Bella and Connor moved in with their dad, later cutting ties with their mom. Because, unlike them, Nicole is not a Scientologist.

It was likely hurtful but a lot of time has gone by and the kids are no longer kids — Isabella is 25 and Connor is 23. While they still don’t have much of a relationship, Nicole handles it all with grace and love. When asked by Australia’s Who magazine about them, she remained reserved but shared more than expected.

“I’m very private about that,” she told the mag. “I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

The fiercely private actress also mentioned the S word — and kept it brief yet packed with feeling (that could be interpreted as shade, if you believe a class act like Nicole would throw it).

“They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”

She continued: “I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here. I think that’s so important because if that is taken away from a child, to sever that in any child, in any relationship, in any family — I believe it’s wrong. So that’s our job as a parent, to always offer unconditional love.”

Kidman is all kinds of saintly. Instead of feeling slighted, Nicole continues to be loving and supportive and ready to embrace her older kids. While it probably hurts to have lost touch with them, perhaps there will be a shift sometime in the future. Good for Nic for being the bigger person. She’s proof that unconditional love ain’t no joke.
