If you’ve been on the fence about the fanny pack trend, you better get firmly in the NO yard. At least, if you want to stay in Canadian hockey star Taylor Hall’s good style books. The New Jersey Devils player spilled all his best fashion advice from the “classy” Canadian tuxedo to his own celebrity style inspirations (spoiler, he’s not one for teammate P.K. Subban’s eccentric style) in his recent interview with The Loop and one thing that’s no laughing matter is his stance on the humble fanny pack.

Taylor sat down with us in Toronto in September to celebrate the launch of his own BonLook glasses collection—the Canadian company’s first men’s collab. The player’s collection includes four frames named for important places and people in his life—“Kingston” and “Augusta” (Georgia) for his hometown and where he selected the frames, and “Louise” and “Andrews” for his GF’s and BFF’s middle names respectively. A style icon in his own right, Hall thinks of the collab as a way to help other men find a classic glasses style that suits them.

“[Wearing glasses] is almost like wearing a belt or a different pair of shoes—I think it just really adds another element to your look,” Taylor said. “It kind of makes your hair look a little bit different, your whole complexion. It’s been really interesting designing, picking out the frames that look best on my face and that I think will look best on guys that are similar to me.”

Taylor was kind enough to let us grill him on every element of his style to truly give the gents (or anyone, really) the “Guide to Dressing Like Taylor.”

Who is your ultimate celeb style inspo?

Tom Brady I would say is someone that I look up to. He wears a lot of different outfits, a lot of different styles but I think he keeps it pretty classy with a bit of an edge without going too far. And he looks great every time you see him.

Most frequently worn item of clothing?

Other than my BonLook frames, I would say, my watch.

Bright socks or neutral socks?

Neutral. Or no socks at all.

If you were to go for patterned socks, what would be the most characteristic pattern for you?

Around Christmas time I would say Santa Claus or reindeer, something like that—something festive.

Favourite season to dress for?

Fall.

David Beckham or P.K. Subban’s style?

David Beckham.

Don Cherry or Ron MacLean suits?

I’m going to go with Ron MacLean.

Favourite suit colour that isn’t black?

Blue.

Two-piece or three-piece?

Three piece.

Fedora, beanie or baseball cap?

Baseball cap.

Canadian tuxedo—classy or trashy?

Classy.

Fun ties or classic ties?

Classic.

Stainless steel watchband or leather?

Leather.

Suspenders—yay or nay?

No.

Pocket squares—yay or nay?

Yay.

Men’s sandals—underrated or should never see the light of day?

Underrated.

Bowties—yay or nay?

Only on the right occasion.

Go-to tie knot?

Windsor? I only know how to do a tie one way. No one’s even ever taught me how to do a tie, I just kind of figured it out.

Cardigans or bomber jackets?

Bomber jacket.

Denim jacket or leather jacket?

Denim.

Loafers or dress shoes?

Dress shoes.

Would you wear a fanny pack?

No! I don’t know why guys are doing that right now. It’s so bad. It’s just terrible, it’s awful. So that’s a no. That’s a no for the fanny packs… for anyone.

So if you had to carry a kind of bag that’s not a hockey bag what would it be?

Like a backpack, maybe.
