There’s art, and then there’s performance art. And then there’s Madonna. Long before the Lady Gagas and the Britney Spears of the world shocked people with their meat dresses and anacondas, Madonna was the original Material Girl when it came to giving concert-goers their money’s worth.
And it seems as though she’s still doing it.
The 57-year-old is currently wrapping up her Rebel Heart Tour, but it’s her behind-the-scenes life that people have been talking about lately — especially since it may or may not have leaked over into her performance.
According to recent reports, Madonna has been swigging tequila during the show, falling off tricycles and lamenting about the ongoing custody battle she and ex Guy Ritchie are currently fighting over their 15-year-old son Rocco.

“Somebody take care of me, please somebody take care of me,” she’s reportedly wailed on stage while singing a song dedicated to her son, whose picture flashed on the screen behind her.
But is this a true Madonna meltdown or just another case of performance art? Tears of a clown is a thing, after all. Sure, it certainly looks as though Madge is drinking in the picture she shared on Twitter above, but it also looks as though she’s practiced falling off little bikes a la clowning around during rehearsals too.
Insane clown Posse…………………🎉🎉🍾🍾‼️😂👍🏻❌🍷💘💘🐿🎉🎉👍🏻💃🏻https://t.co/iIdVbVY3cY

We mean, it works when Joaquin Phoenix does it — that dude is known for his “performance art.” Is this the same thing? Madonna would certainly have us believe so, since she shared this Instagram post in defence of her show.
Thanks for supporting me. Too bad people don’t know the art of acting and playing a character. I could never do any of my shows high or drunk. And yes underlying all of this is sexism and mysongony which proves that not only do we not get equal pay bUt we are still treated like heretics if we step out of line and think outside the box! . Sexism is alive and kicking but i am ❤️#livingforlove
Okay sure, Madonna hasn’t won any Oscars or anything (just a measly Golden Globe for her role in Evita), but maybe she’s a better actress than we’ve all given her credit for.
