A Canadian co-created Superman, sure, but now it looks like another Canadian has the power to destroy the Man of Steel.
Nova Scotian Glen Simon possesses the closest thing to kryptonite on Earth. As we all know, kryptonite only exists in comic books and movies – unlike Superman, who is obviously real – but Simon’s jadarite contains the exact composition as good ol’ krypto. Which technically means…he could end Superman if he wanted to.
Simon received the rare Serbian mineral, which was discovered in 2006, as a birthday gift a few years ago and at first didn’t believe he was the owner of Earth’s real-life kryptonite. That is, until he met Matt Schumacher, a geology instructor at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S. who took a look at it.
“Jadarite is a white to colourless-white mineral. What makes this sample so unique is that there’s copper that’s been incorporated into the mineral and that copper gives it its unique and distinct green colour,” Schumacher said.
As for how Simon wants to use it, he says he’s more than willing to have a little chat with Superman’s latest rival.
“I would say that I’m more partial to Batman than I am Superman, so in the upcoming movie [Batman v Superman] I’m rooting for Batman,” says Schumacher. “If Bruce Wayne came up to me, being the multi-billionaire that he is, I’m sure that we [could] negotiate something.”
