The jury may still be out on Kanye West and his actions as of late, but there’s no denying that when it comes to making other people’s dreams come true, he still has a little influence. If not the actual cold, hard cash he needs for his own artistic vision.

Halifax native Hafiia Mira can certainly attest to that. The 24-year-old has just returned home from New York Fashion Week after appearing as a model for West’s Yeezy presentation at Madison Square Garden, a career move that has catapulted her into a lifestyle of the rich and famous.

According to Mira, ever since landing the gig, she’s hung out with the likes of fellow Canadians Drake and Justin Bieber, not to mention Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar and even Mrs. West herself, Kim Kardashian.

And she owes it all to the power of social media.

That’s because Mira was contacted by West’s representatives on Instagram about a year ago, asking if she’d come to New York and audition. It took four emails to convince the bartender that the emails were legit, and then a little bit of a “tough girl” act once she finally went out to secure the job.

To her, that meant doing sit-ups and push-ups in front of the camera to prove she was tough. Obviously it was a move that paid off, because not only was she asked back for two more seasons of the line, but she was also picked as the cover model for this year’s look book.

Today, she’s had international doors open up for her and is working on her own swimsuit line. Not too shabby for a gal who came to Canada as a refugee, and who as recently as 12 months ago was slinging cocktails at a local watering hole.

Now if only we could agree that the Yeezy line was that breathtaking…
