What is with this season of The Amazing Race Canada? For some reason the teams keep switching Detours mid-challenge, and it keeps coming back to bite them in the arse. That’s part of what sent last week’s bootees, Megan and Courtney, home (mind you they probably should have used their Express Pass), and it certainly has resulted in a few teams coming close to elimination so far, in the four short weeks this season has been on the air.
For those who need a bit of a reminder, Tuesday night’s episode of the reality series headed from Vancouver to China, where the seven remaining teams got to do things like give a tour of the Great Wall (in three different languages), interrupt a hockey game at a Canadian centre, and either dance or dive their way to the next Pit Stop.
As it turns out, it was the dive or dance Detour that tripped at least two teams up. Montrealers Andrea and Ebonie were the second team to arrive at the diving station (where they had to synchronize dive to a score of 20 or more), but they quickly realized that swimming was just not their jam. And so they decided to switch to the dancing, but not before watching team after team surpass them on the much higher diving board to the applause of the three judges below.
Sadly, trainers Korey and Ivana found themselves in a similar boat. After arriving at the diving station last, thanks to an excruciatingly slow taxi, they attempted to perfectly plummet into the pool below. Unfortunately Ivana hurt her back pretty badly, which meant that they too had to switch Detours and do the dancing.
And we all know that dancing isn’t everyone’s strong suit.
Eventually both of the teams got through the challenge, but of course, there was one final Road Block ahead: deciphering Chinese characters at an herbal dispensary, something that Ebonie turned out to be kind of awful at. She confessed to cameras that she’s terrible at paying attention to details, and that — coupled with all of the time the team lost trying to dive before they went dancing — meant that the French gals landed last on the mat. In reality, they were well behind the night’s winning team, father and son duo Shabbir and Zeb, who scored themselves a 15-day tour of China as a little prize.
At home, we were ready to shed a few tears at the idea that our two favourite all-females teams were going to be eliminated back-to-back. But instead, we got to fist-pump at the fact that a second chance was in the cards for Ebonie and Andrea after all. Because this leg just so happened to be a “keep racing” leg, and the girls were thankfully still in it.
So now, heading into next week’s leg, it looks as though the pressure is on in full force. Can the women catch up to the rest of the teams and stay in it? Or are they just too far behind at this point? Whatever the case, this is a good reminder for us all that you should never give up on a race like this. Not when anything can happen, at any rate!
And on we go…
