Jimmy Fallon and The Roots are pros at transforming elaborate songs into simple diddies using classroom instruments in place of actual ones. And this year was no different as One Direction stopped by The Tonight Show and performed “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” kindergarten style.

Everyone was decked out in their holiday best – sweaters, that is – and it was amazing. We’re not sure which one we liked better: Jimmy’s skiing Santa or Harry Styles‘ tinsel-y tree, but their instruments were clear winners.

Sure, Jimmy and Harry looked like they scored the best stuff (Fallon had the wood block and Casio keyboard, while Styles lucked out with the bass drum and kazoo), but as we all know from experience, that (Zayn Malik’s) triangle makes the prettiest sound. Louis Tomlinson shook the heck out of his tambourine, Liam Payne was as spirited as one could be with coconuts, but it’s Niall Horan that appeared to be having the best time, working that banana shaker like nobody’s business. The Roots guys obviously had a blast with their instruments, because who wouldn’t have fun with hand clackers, a Fisher Price drum, a xylophone, a melodica, a ukulele, a toy sax, bongos and sleigh bell? So lucky!

If you haven’t gotten enough of these dudes, they’ll be back on The Tonight Show Tuesday night at 11:30 p.m. EST on CTV Two. Hmm, maybe they’ll do another song…sans sweaters, if we’re lucky.

There’s still a few hours left until you can watch 1D hangout with Fallon again. In the meantime, why not take a look at their best moments of 2014?
