All season long we thought that How To Get Away With Murder was building towards a fire at Annalise’s house that claims the life of a key character. Well, that’s true, but what we didn’t know was that it’s also building towards one of the Keating 5 turning on Annalise. This week we found out who finally decided to jump ship.
After watching his mother kill herself, finding out his girlfriend Rebecca had been murdered, being forced to shoot Annalise by Annalise, and then watching his biological father shot and killed only inches away during their first meeting, Wes has been pushed too far. Really, it’s impressive that he hadn’t snapped already.
This week we learned that Annalise is being charged with arson and first degree murder, with evidence courtesy of an anonymous source that ties her to the charges. We now know that this anonymous tip is from Wes, although the fire part is confusing. Wes signs his immunity contract with the police in one of the green-hued flash forward moments, but does this moment take place before, during, or after the fire? The two detectives are wearing the same clothes when they meet with Wes and Annalise, so we know the meetings take place within 24 hours of each other. If Wes’ meeting is before the fire, then Wes could still be the body under the sheet. But since each episode has ended with another character being marked safe, it would make sense that Wes isn’t under the sheet. We’re just not sure how the arson charge comes into play if Wes gave his statement earlier in the day before the fire.
As we saw during this week’s episode when Annalise bravely (or stupidly, we’re not sure) invited her students to ‘come at her,’ everyone has many, many reasons to be upset with their professor. What stood out the most during this scene is something Connor said and has been saying for two seasons – had they all gone to the police when Sam died, everyone would probably be fine. The Keating 5 did, after all, find Sam chasing Rebecca with the intent to kill her, with Wes killing Sam to stop him from murdering Rebecca. That’s a pretty reasonable defense, right? At first glance, Wes seems like the most surprising choice for turning Annalise in, but he’s really not. Annalise has been injecting herself into Wes’ life since his childhood and regardless of her intentions, her actions have always resulted in negative consequences on Wes’ life.
Now, what does Wes’ meeting with the police and Frank’s return mean for Wes and Laurel? And is Laurel’s baby the result of her new relationship with Wes or her old relationship with Frank? We’re not sure. But we are sure that we’re happy Connor and Oliver are back together. At least we can say one happy thing has taken place this season. Unless Connor is the dead body under the sheet. Then this show is just mean.
Season 3 of How To Get Away With Murder is building towards a fire at Annalise’s house that claims the life of one character, who we now know is male. Each episode will conclude with one or more characters being crossed off the dead body list, with Wes earning this week’s reveal.
Survivor List: Annalise, Oliver, Bonnie, Meggie, Laurel + Baby, Michaela, Asher, Wes
