Just when we were starting to recover from Taylor Swift dropping her new single and music video last week, Shawn Mendes decided it was time for him to drop his own pop music bomb. Our poor hearts can only take so much, but we’re willing to push through.

The Toronto-born singer released his latest bop, “If I Can’t Have You” at midnight Thursday and we’re already obsessed. He also dropped a sleek black and white music video which we’ve definitely watched a non-obsessive number of times.

Oooh so artsy! So French New Wave! So… delightfully Mendesian!

Opening up about the new track, Shawn told radio host Zane Low on Apple Music’s Beats 1 that he’s in a period of experimentation right now (we would argue that this sounds pretty characteristic, but you do you, Shawn).

“I’m going through this phase right now where I’m testing out all the styles I can possibly be doing,” he said. “Pop is what’s in my blood—no pun intended. In the last six months I wrote about 45 songs and they’re all over the place and different vibes. This is the one consistently every time I played for myself and for friends and family was giving people that smile.”

Well, between this new record and the fact that you made a pun about your own music, you’ve got us smiling too, Shawn. And the #MendesArmy seems to agree.

Fans from T-dot had reason to be particularly pumped, with a legit shout-out in the first verse of the song: “I’m in Toronto and I got this view but I might as well be in a hotel room.” We feel seen.

Mendes is really having a moment right now. He just finished the European leg of his self-titled tour and will soon embark on more dates across Canada, the U.S., Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. This weekend, he’ll fill the coveted musical guest slot on Saturday Night Live—his for the second timewhere he’s set to perform “If I Can’t Have You” live for the first time.
