The Toronto International Film Festival red carpets are all about having fun and experimenting with beauty trends, and we’ve certainly been seeing this at the 2018 festival. Celebrities prepare for weeks, sometimes months, in advance for their TIFF red carpet appearances. It’s a makeup artist’s job to make them look absolutely flawless for their strut on the red carpet.

Here are some of the biggest makeup trends that have made their way down the TIFF red carpets, as well as some industry secrets from Janine Holmes on keeping these looks lasting into the after party!

COLOURFUL LINER & EXPENSIVE-LOOKING SKIN

Instead of wearing a lot of colourful accessories at TIFF, we saw celebrities wearing pops of coloured eyeshadow on their eyes.

How-to:

  • Run your colourful liner under your eye (it might take multiple swipes to get the colour effect that’s desired)
  • If the colour is too strong, smudge the liner with a brush to soften the trend.

To get that Hollywood glow, remember this: makeup isn’t just for the face! If skin is exposed, add makeup to highlight certain areas (like your collarbone and shoulders), and to create an overall glow.

    How-to:

    • Spray a moisturizing makeup spray to add a layer of hydration to the collar bones and shoulders.
    • Dust an illuminating highlighting powder across the shoulders and collar.
    • Also, dusting the same highlighter on the ears really draws light to the face and creates a glowing effect around the face.

INVISIBLE LINER & CLASSIC MATTE RED LIP

This year at the festival, a lot of celebs embraced a natural eye with barely-there eyeliner. Invisible liner has all the benefits of a full lash line, without the drama.

    How-to:

    • Simply trace your eyeliner of choice along your upper water line.

Nothing demands more attention on the TIFF red carpet like a classic matte red lip. A bold lip is always a good idea when you have a minimal eye look. Also, it’s timeless and perfect for fall.

    How-to:

    • First, prep lips with a lip plumping gloss to promote blood flow and to load the lips with moisture.
    • Once the gloss has soaked in, outline the lips with a lip pencil to define and create the desired shape of the lip.
    • Lightly feather the lip pencil all over to help the colour last longer.
    • Finally, apply a lip powder all over for that punch of colour and for an added plumping effect.

    SMOKEY EYE & NEUTRAL LIP

A bold, smokey eye goes hand in hand with red carpets, all around the world. It takes the drama up a notch when you’re going out on the town. False lashes will really enhance this look.

    How-to:

    • Place a strip of false eyelashes to the top lid of your eye
    • Use tweezers to pinch the false lashes and natural lashes together for a seamless, almost undetectable finish.
    • Apply a coat of mascara to blend the lashes even more.

Gloss is really coming back this season and it’s the perfect partner for such a bold look.
