The awful undercurrent to most of the worst looks celebrities wore this week was just plain poor choice, almost as if there wasn’t a second look in the mirror in most cases. Sometimes you gotta just get out the door, true, but the red carpet calls for a moment of sartorial reflection. For some, that moment didn’t happen this week.
If the goal was to look like a children’s entertainer, a cheap plush tiger toy, or an albino hummingbird, these stars did it. If the goal was to rock a fabulous red carpet look that pushed the boundaries of cool but didn’t burst out like clowns from a clown car, they failed. Because there are clowns everywhere.
It’s cool that stars like Shay Mitchell, Dania Ramirez and Debra Messing are trying out some unique styles, but it might be time to go back to basics for a while.
There was a pattern of bad choices on the red carpet this week
Tracee Ellis RossIs anyone else having flashbacks to elementary school gym class and those giant rainbow parachute things? This colour combination is not very elegant, although the sequin pattern is cool. It also looks like the dress could use a good steaming.Getty Images
Tommy DorfmanTommy Dorfman is definitely the biggest fashion risk taker of the 13 Reasons Why cast, and while that’s usually a good thing, this outfit looks like two very different concepts shoved together. The sparkly boots are very Lady Gaga, but the top is very Vivienne Westwood. They just don’t work together.Getty Images
Shay MitchellWait, what? Of all the Pretty Little Liars cast, Shay has been the one most consistently on every best-dressed list. Yet here she is. There’s nothing wrong with the shape of this gown, but how could she not see that velvet tiger print was a bad idea? Hopefully she’ll be back on top next week.Getty Images
Shannon PurserThis neoprene skater dress is a great style on Shannon, and would be so much more cute in any other pattern than this one. There’s way too much going on, and seemingly no attempt to line up the pattern at the seams. In a different pattern that could look intentional, but this one’s so chaotic it looks like a mistake.Getty Images
Rosamund PikeThis dress is too drab. It’s sad to say, because the fabric at the top has potential and a subtly exaggerated shoulder is usually so good. But the fabric also gathers awkwardly at her hips, ribs, and elbows. Overall, it’s fine, but who wants their outfit described as “fine”?Getty Images
Molly TarlovMolly’s character on Awkward was definitely the funniest, not to mention the fiercest. This wrinkled baby doll dress is the opposite of fierce, and there’s nothing hoop earrings and wicked pompon shoes can do to save it. It’s way too childlike. Now that’s awkward.Getty Images
Kate HudsonKate looks great, and definitely has that relaxed, breezy cool that has become her trademark, but what is going on with that fringed vest? Actually, it could be part of her blouse, it’s hard to tell, but that would be even worse than a vest. Maybe it’s just a scarf? Anyway, it’s not great, is the point.Getty Images
Julia MichaelsJulia’s song "Issues" is amazing, but there are some major issues with this outfit. The whole silky PJs and a bralette thing has been huge lately, but most people have worn it in a solid colour, not whatever this clown print is. The drawstring waist and ruffle sleeves/legs are not making it any better.Getty Images
Farrah AbrahamFarrah likes to get people talking, and this outfit definitely accomplishes that. But not all press is good press, and Farrah has been slammed for cultural appropriation for this look. If she was attending a Bollywood themed party, maybe it would be understandable, but this look just came out of nowhere.Getty Images
Debra MessingThis catastrophic, bronze-tinfoil-wrapped jumpsuit Debra Messing wore to the GLAAD Media Awards may have been an ill-chosen outfit for the event (or ever), but it should in no way diminish your excitement for the return of Will and Grace. That’s still going to be awesome, despite this flop.Getty Images
Debby RyanThis is fun, that’s for sure, but the scoop slit is kind of awkward, the layered tops feels a little too '90s and casual, and the skirt pattern is a touch carnival-y. If the sheer green top didn’t have T-shirt sleeves, it might make the look a tad more sophisticated. Getty Images
David BeckhamOkay, let’s be real, David Beckham looks freaking amazing in anything, but this suit is not his best. It looks like it’s been woven out of burlap, or snakeskin, or some ungodly combination of the two. That look may have been able to work by itself, but the brown suede shoes are absolutely not working, and they make the suit look worse by association.Getty Images
Dania RamirezThe hummingbird decal is very cool, but combined with the feathery ruffled fabric, this dress comes across as the hummingbird version of Bjork’s iconic swan dress. She’s looking a little less Devious Maids and a little more like something one would use to clean.Getty Images
Billy Ray CyrusLook, no one expects Billy Ray to stick to the exact same style forever, but it’s a little convenient that now that his famous daughters Miley and Noah are wearing edgier looks he suddenly also starts wearing lots of black leather. Is there a new family dress code?Getty Images
Annabelle WallisAny one of the outfits worn by Annabelle’s character in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword would be remarkably better than this dress. The lace inserts might be great against a different textile, but the stripes are so jarring it’s hard to picture it.Getty Images
Amandla StenbergThat blue lipstick on Amandla is brilliant, and it would be great if other stars would try out some non-traditional lipstick colours sometimes. Sadly, the rest of this outfit is not so inspiring. It’s like a bizarre pajama shirt with oversized pockets and weird sleeves.Getty Images
AJ McLeanAs a former Backstreet Boy, this outfit is not unexpected from AJ, but wouldn’t it be great if his style evolved a little? Instead of looking like a mature yet fashion forward man, he looks like he’s trying too hard to fit in with the Harry Styleses and Justin Biebers of the world. Also, that hat belongs in a dust-covered trunk in an attic somewhere.Getty Images
