At her January 5 show at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, things could have gone south quickly after Celine Dion brought an overly-friendly fan up on stage with her. The fan — who was visibly intoxicated — was only onstage for a few seconds before she got very close to Celine for what appeared to be a hug and then began humping her instead. After an operatic exclamation of surprise, Dion waved off her security personnel and sang “I love you, you love me” (yes, the well-known Barney tune).

One fan caught part of the encounter on video and posted it to YouTube. They also offered an explanation for why Celine was so accommodating to the inappropriate fan. According to the video poster, the fan told Celine that her son had just had a bone marrow transplant and she wanted to urge everyone to become donors.

“It’s 2018. We’re going to make a change for your baby,” Dion told the fan, “You know what? We’ve got something in common: we got babies that we love and we want to fight for them everywhere we go.” She then hugged the fan good-bye and told her that security was going to help her out. When the fan became distraught by the men coming toward her, Celine waved them away again and said she would help her instead.

As the fan tried to walk off stage, she took a stumble on the stairs and Celine dramatically fell to the ground as well. After a moment, she got back up, waved to the fan and thanked the audience for their patience.

“You know what? Some people go through a lot,” she said, “And some people need to talk and I want to say thank you to all of you. Because for maybe five minutes, we have given this lady a moment to talk… I think it was important. Thank you so much for your patience tonight.”

The video has made its rounds on the internet and fans are praising Celine Dion for her compassionate handling of the uncomfortable situation.

The majority of the comments on the YouTube video were positive as well — almost unheard of on the website. Commentors were in awe of Celine and empathetic toward the fan.

“She handled that well. The lady obviously had too much to drink but it is Las Vegas and I’m sure she never expected to be on stage with Celine. I don’t want to judge her… She is going through a difficult time. Kudos to Celine for handling this so well and with understanding,” read one.

“I’m impressed. She handled that well and with class. Hats off to Céline Dion. Bravo,” read another.

Celine Dion proves once again that she is nothing if not a professional.
