Whether you’ve toyed with the idea of inking your bod or already have a handful of tattoos, chances are, you’re going to think this new trend is pretty darn pretty.

This is the helix ear tattoo, a dainty, subtle and, yes, permanent way to express your personal style. Ultra-fine lines are expertly drawn into various patterns, from simple geometric designs, like a few horizontal lines, to whimsical vines that climb down the ear and are dotted with teensy flowers.

One of the advantages of this trend is how subtle it can appear.

Of course, the flip side of this is that you’re tattooing really, really close to your face. If you change your mind, you can’t just take it out like a piercing.

So, like all ink, you should think long and hard about what you want and if you really want it. Because once it’s there, it’s there, forever. Or at least until you cough up a couple weeks salary to get laser removal.

Some celebs have hopped aboard the tattooed ear train — Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Cara Delevingne all have small designs inside their ear — but we’ve yet to see anyone really mainstream with these new piercing replacement markings on the cartilage and flesh bits known as the helix. Who will be the first to get behind this new trend?

If you’re into this look, but not ready to fully commit, consider using a waterproof liquid eyeliner with a really fine tip, and carefully apply a few small lines to your ear. Voila! You’re the coolest friend in your circle. And worst case scenario, you can just wash it off in the shower

Here are some more interesting designs to gawk over.
