Finding the exact nude lipstick for your skin tone can be a bit of a slog. Too light, and you’ll resemble something more undead than alive. Too pink, and you’re channeling Barbie. But it turns out the trick to finding the most flattering nude lipstick for your unique skin tone has been with you this whole time.
All you have to do is lift up your shirt and take off your bra (if you’re wearing one, that is).
That’s right, according to the TV show The Doctors, the best way to find the lip colour that perfectly complements your skin tone is to match it to your nipple colour.
“We have a great way to pick your best shade for your face,” said Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and former Bachelor. “What you want to do, you want to match your nipple color. Oh-so-simple. Nature knows best.” This theory isn’t exactly new. Beauty editor Marci Robin wrote about it on xoJane in 2015, asking fellow beauty writers to test out the theory. Sure enough, it seems legit.
Nipples are naturally a few shades darker and deeper in colour than the skin, so they make for a good palette to match up against — though you might want to rethink busting out a nip at Sephora. Of course, nipples can change colour over time due to pregnancy and aging, but still, they give you a good place to start. From there, if you don’t find the perfect match to your pucker, you’ll at least know if you need to go a bit darker or lighter.
Now excuse us while we strip down and compare our nips to the lipsticks we’ve been collecting, just to see how close we’ve been.
