Pizza is one of the world’s most beloved foods, so it makes sense that PETA would add itself to that delicious conversation. And that’s exactly what the organization did in Winnipeg, when vegans dressed up as “sexy pizza” to hand out free vegan slices. The event wasn’t wholly altruistic, since it coincided with the Manitoba Dairy Conference in Winnipeg, and the three participants were looking to target the industry for its alleged cruelty toward animals.
This sexy Italian protest got us thinking: PETA has tried every tactic imaginable to get the world’s attention, from simulated bloody corpse flash mobs to getting celebrities to pose nude to being so not subtle at all about their messaging (see: dog with gun to its head). We’ve rounded up 16 ad campaigns from throughout the years, and they’re everything from horrifyingly offensive and tasteless to kind of, um, cute?
Warning: a couple of these photos are kind of brutal.
The ridiculous lengths PETA has gone to get our attention
Master race? This ad campaign was made to protest the Westminster dog show. Hm. Breeders = Hitler? Might need to rethink that math. PETA
Got sick kids?PETA parodied 'Got Milk?' campaigns with this one, if you couldn't tell. Yeah, it's pretty exploitative. We kind of want cereal now. PETA
The mutt gets itNothing like threatening the slaughter of animals with the slaughter of animals. PETA
Hooked on meat?Okay, so we get where PETA was going with this, but having a nearly naked woman hung up like meat was probably not going to win over a lot of people (and it didn't).PETA
Did your food have a face? This is straight to the point. Bloody, skinned animal head? Yeah, it's uncomfortable, but we get it loud and clear. Points for shooting it in what looks like a bathroom. PETA
KFC CrueltyThis campaign was a big one for PETA, and the illustrations are kind of cute. It's a win for getting children to think about their meat, but also terrifying. PETA
Fur Trim: UnattractiveThis just seems kind of rude. PETA should be able to protest fur without attacking women who don't shave.PETA
Too much pu**yNothing says opportunism like asking "The Situation" to use a double entendre at the height of 'Jersey Shore' popularity. PETA
Too Much SexMost people are familiar with Pamela Anderson's naked PETA ad, but PETA is really into naked people. Sasha Grey, porn star, stripped down to warn against too much sex. Sex is her business, so she is a liar.PETA
Be an angel for animalsImagine going to this church! This is basically putting everything you can think of that people like in one ad. PETA
Up his butt!PETA isn't afraid to call out companies for their bad business decisions. This is just hilarious.PETA
Santa's not coming this ChristmasLOL, what? This is the funniest Christmas ad in the universe.PETA
Ugly PeoplePETA wants you to know that your decisions and your aesthetic make you ugly. And there is NO way around that.PETA
Canada's club scene sucksOh, we see what you did there, Kesha. That seal is very cute, though.PETA
Homeless animalsWe literally just included this because it is Morrissey with a cat on his head. PETA
Give peas a chanceHahahaha. PETA
