To celebrate their 30th anniversary, PetSmart is giving a free meal to a pet in need for every bag of dry cat or dog purchased in Canada, the U.S. and Puerto Rico for the rest of the year.
They’re calling it the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal Program; we’re calling it brilliant.
The company will donate one meal’s worth of food to animal shelters, rescue organizations and food banks for every bag of dry cat or dog food purchased in-store or online at PetSmart.ca, regardless of brand, flavour or size. They estimate that the program will fill about 60 million bowls, with 3.6 million of them going to Canadian pets.
It’s heartwarming to know that, as you give your cherished pets their dinner, you’ll also be contributing to the nourishment of the around 150,000 homeless pets that spend time in Canadian shelters each year.
The contributions are definitely welcome, too, as the cost of pet food is a significant expense for most shelters and rescue groups. Plus, very few food banks receive pet food donations. PetSmart Charities recently surveyed around 1,800 animal welfare groups across the continent and found that approximately 20 per cent get their pet food via donation. In other words, those 60 million meals will be greatly appreciated.
Just something to keep in mind the next time you head out to stock up on kibble for your beloved furry friends.
