The self-described “positive corner of the internet” boasts 250 million users who help generate content on everything from the perfect wedding updo to 100 things to do with old mason jars. With so many unique visitors to the site every day, Pinterest has a handle on what trends we can expect to see in 2019. Mushrooms, anyone?

The latest trend in travel has adventurers looking to save money and reduce their footprint. Bus travel, bike tours, and zero waste travel — which means sustainable packing, eating and accommodations — all saw a rise in searches.

Avoiding typical tourist spots is also on trend. Small towns had a 276 per cent search increase, with abandoned castles, less traveled islands, and surprise destinations all seeing a surge in searches.

Thanks to the Olympics, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will likely get many more visitors in 2019, with searches for the city up 142 per cent.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Health is hot in 2019. Sober living inspiration posters saw a 746 per cent search spike, with nutrition plans not far behind at 475 per cent. Matcha and elderberries in food and drinks will be popular next year, as will natural ginger, both as a soothing oil and in food to help aid digestion.

The next trend in fitness is one many people can afford, with band workouts, which can be done at home, up 1913 per cent in searches.

When it comes to hobbies and interests in 2019, earning extra cash and saving money are key. Side hustle searches, like DJing and online tutoring, are up 690 per cent, while weekly savings planners are up 295 per cent. Avocados –the quintessential millennial product–are finally catching up to our wallets, with searches for growing an avocado tree up 101 per cent.

As for making your own art, photography of decaying buildings, worn sketchbooks, chalk artwork, and drip and pour acrylic paintings all saw an increase in searches in 2018.

Godparent proposals are the new gender reveal parties for 2019, with searches for godparent proposals up 152 per cent. In the wonderful world of weddings, expect donut décor at the dessert table (up 748 per cent), gold wedding gowns (up 1552 per cent), garland over pews and tables (up 1154 per cent) and smoke bombs for dramatic photos (up 436 per cent). As for venues, backyard weddings signal the continuing move towards more affordable nuptials, with searches up 441 per cent.

Get ready for the year of the mushroom. Searches for mushrooms, which could pop up in everything from coffee to chocolate bars, are up 64 per cent, according to Pinterest. Homemade is hot, with searches for bread and jam seeing a huge spike.

As for the ever-evolving dairy aisle, oat milk is the new almond milk, with searches up 186 per cent. But when it comes to the new fad diet of 2019, that honour goes to Pegan, which is part paleo, part vegan, and up 337 per cent in searches.

Is it even possible to DIY your home without Pinterest? The site is one of the go-to stops for anyone looking to change the look of their home. In 2019, that home will look bold. Bright pops of wall colour, whether it’s paint or wallpaper, are on the rise. Adding colour by painting parquet floors also saw a huge surge, with searches up 1276 per cent. Textured walls are also big, including yarn and fabric walls (up 1718 per cent) and retro tin walls (up 563 per cent).

In 2019, green will dominate, with searches for vertical gardens rising 287 per cent, and cactus arrangements up 287 per cent.

Fashion often repeats itself and that’s the case for menswear in 2019. Light wash denim, mixed prints like plaid and polka dots, corduroy (pants or blazers) will all make a comeback next year.

Accessories will also dominate menswear, with searches for scarves up 29 per cent, wristwatches up 89 per cent, and quarter socks, which come up just above the ankle, up 266 per cent.

You may experience some fashion déjà vu in 2019. Biker shorts are back, with searches for the 1990s staple up 1323 per cent. If you’re not ready to buy your own pair, no problem. Rentable fashion is on the rise, with the eco-friendly movement seeing an increase of 34 per cent in searches.

Comfort will be key in 2019, with statement sneakers searched an extra 2211 per cent. Robe silhouettes mean next year’s looking cozier than ever, and ruching on gowns, pants and coats will once again be big in 2019.

Get ready for a lot of cropped bangs in 2019, with searches for baby bangs (which sit just above the eyebrows) up 51 per cent. As for hair colour, more people are opting to grow out their grey. For those who do want to experiment with dye, lilac locks saw an increase in searches of 1077 per cent.

For men’s hair, French crop haircuts are on the rise, with searches for the trim style up 84 per cent.

Gloss is in for both lips and eyes, and 2019 is also moving towards a more natural makeup look paired with a strong red lip.

As for nails, almond shape is in and powder dipping, which outlasts traditional gel nails, saw an increase in searches of 442 per cent.

KIDS AND PARENTING

Parents love Pinterest. According to a survey conducted by the site, 56 per cent of parents say they use Pinterest as their main source of information on parenting, while 81 per cent say they couldn’t parent without the help of Pinterest. (Note, the sample of parents were likely on Pinterest already.) When it comes to the trends for parenting and kids in 2019, less screen time and more experience-based activities are on the rise.

Searches for artwork that includes birth information went up 315 per cent in 2018, with rustic nurseries the latest baby trend. Once the child outgrows the nursery, they can transition into a room with geometric patterns and shapes, with searches for the décor up 1178 per cent.

For older kids, parents are opting for audiobooks over screen time to help make bedtime less stimulating. Less waste is also important for parents, with searches for toy share subscriptions up 313 per cent.
