America, we tip our hat to you.
In the wake of the tragic events that unfolded in Ottawa, the Pittsburgh Penguins honoured their northern neighbours by singing Canada’s national anthem at the start of their game against Philadelphia Flyers. It’s a moment that defines one of the greatest things about our country’s relationship with its southern neighbour: When things get bad, we drop our rivalries and come together.
And what better way to show respect than at Canada’s favourite game? The lyrics to our anthem were displayed on the scoreboard to help get everyone involved. And get involved they did. Fans wearing both Flyers and Penguins jerseys are seen belting out the words to “O Canada”, proving hockey is often a lot more than just a game.
