Another day, another royal development. It seems people surrounding the Royals just can’t keep their opinions to themselves. A supposed friend of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles has been talking to the press about the Markles, and boy, did he have some cutting words for them.
Nicky Haslam, an interior designer with a long-term connection to the Royal Family as the son of one of Queen Victoria’s goddaughters, and friend of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, called the Markles “frightfully common,” singling out Meghan’s father Thomas Markle in particular as a “huge lump.”
OK, OK, we all know the Markle side of the family haven’t exactly put their best foot forward (remember when her half-brother Thomas tried to talk Harry out of marrying Meghan, and then went back on it to try and score an invite? Or when half-sister Samantha appeared on various TV shows and basically talked trash about her?).
As we all may recall, dad Thomas also caused some major pre-wedding drama when he staged some rather questionable paparazzi snaps (with the help of Samantha) in the immediate run up to the big day. That, plus health issues led to his eventual withdrawal from the whole occasion… leaving mother Doria Ragland the only member of Meghan’s actual family to attend the nuptials.
Haslam went on to say that Thomas’s attendance would, in fact, have been “awful,” and you can kind of see where he’s coming from. But surely that’s for friends of the Royal Family to speak of behind closed doors, if at all? Given that Thomas himself cannot seem to keep quiet, the last thing the Palace needs is more gossip circulating around their newest in-laws.
Apparently immune to the curse of being common however, according to Haslam, was Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, whom can we all agree, has been loyal, dignified and discreet. “One person who wasn’t common was her mother,” Haslam opined. So, he may be onto something there too. He also implied some of the blame for the PR fracas surrounding the Markles may have something to do with the Palace’s approach. “The royals probably don’t quite know how to deal with them.”
And Haslam didn’t stop there. Also not safe from the designer’s sharp tongue was Meghan’s dress, when he echoed some of the criticisms lodged at Meghan’s wedding day look. “I didn’t very much like her dress — it didn’t fit, among other things. It should have been made of thinner stuff, it seemed to be made of concrete,” though that’s just getting mean-spiritedly specific.
It’s worth it to note, however, that Haslam did post about the article on his Instagram, stating, “This rubbish was written by a frightfully you know what Daily Mail diary stringer, the ill-educated Joanna Bell. She’s usually on the sauce by lunchtime, so avoid her at the Spectator party tonight.”
Maybe Haslam is regretting his loose lips?
